What happens when one moment changes the direction of your life—and you must decide how you are going to move forward?

On July 20, 2017, Matthew Fumo dove into shallow water while swimming with friends near the Longport Bridge in Ocean City, New Jersey. He struck his head on the bottom, sustained a C4 spinal cord injury, and was paralyzed from the shoulders down. He was told he could remain on a breathing tube for up to three years and would never move anything below his neck again.

But Matt’s story did not end with what he was told.

In today’s episode, Matt and his sister, Julia Fumo, share the realities of that day, the long and continuing road of recovery, and what the experience taught their entire family about resilience, hope, support, and moving forward.

Today, Matt is president of Unbroken Motion, and Julia serves as secretary. Together, they are building a community to support individuals living with spinal cord injuries and the families walking beside them.
